I havenapos;t decided yet where i would study medicine. My top 3 choices are PGH, UST and PLM. Each for different reasons. PGH:the best in practical medicine; UST: equipt and incorporates ethics; PLM: most affordable without compromising academic excellence.
I think I want to study in PGH but I donapos;t think I have the grades for it. They only admit 60 females and 60 males a year. I have the whole country for competition. To even be able to be interviewed, I should be at least a cum laude. Anyway, my prof in UP is from PGH. We asked him why he didnapos;t practice and he told us that he couldnapos;t imagine himself working in a hospital after what heapos;s been through. He said that most of his friends that studied there didnapos;t practice; they either taught, had a business or bacame consultants. He told us that it was really a challenge to study there and that if we were planning to go there, we must have a very high emotional quotient. The students in PGH are like new born cubs released into the wild without any guidance. During their first year, they were given case studies and it was up to them to solve them, no instructions were given. Since PGH is a public hospital, and one of the best public hospitals, there were more patients than one could imagine. And all of the diseases that you could ever know is there. This is why I think it would be best to study there because the student is exposed to so many kinds of diseases and abnormalities. Anyway, since there are sooo many patients and most of their diseases are really depressing, the students tend to train themselves to have a stone heart; because if the donapos;t, chances are, theyapos;re going to have an emotional breakdown. Because of this, after the students graduate fromPGH, they look more on the logical side of medicine and most of them can tell a patient that he has a terminal disease with a straight face. In that school, they focus more on the logical side of medicine.
In UST however, since it is a Catholic school, they have Ethics in their curriculum. And since it is a private school, the students there are well taken care of. They are spoon fed most of the time and they are really good in the theoretical aspects of medicine. They remain compassionate to the patients even after they graduated from the school. However, inside the operating room or even the emergency room, PGH graduates are still better at the practical stuff. Oh, and studying there is really expensive.
Scenario: A pregnant woman and her baby have a critical condition. They can;t be both operated on otherwise, they will have a 10 chance of survival. If only the mother is saved, she has a 90 chance of survival; and if only the baby is saved, it has a 30 chance of survival. *there is no time to consult the family*
PGH: they will save the mother for practical reasons because if they save them both, chances are, they will both die.
UST: They will still try to save them both even if there is a 90 chance that both of them will die on the table.
What will I do???
Anyway, Iapos;m still thinking about it and iapos;m going to apply on the three schools.
